Tipstake is designed to connect punters and pundits worldwide, allowing them to compete based on their accuracy in predicting sports outcomes. This platform not only recognizes skilled predictors but also fosters a community where users can share insights and tips. Initially targeting Nigeria, the largest gambling market in Africa, Tipstake aims to transform the betting landscape by providing reliable information and analytics to bettors.

The Challenge

The world of betting can often feel like a guessing game, especially when bettors have limited access to trustworthy analytics. The primary challenge we faced was addressing the overwhelming lack of reliable information available to bettors. Most individuals often rely on surface-level stats or gut feelings, leading to poor betting decisions and frequently, financial loss. To make matters worse, the market was flooded with unreliable punters who misrepresented their success rates, creating a breeding ground for scams.

The Goal

Our goal was clear: design a product that would empower bettors with accurate information and promote responsible betting practices. We aspired to create an engaging platform that not only informed but also enriched the betting community. This approach emphasized profitability per stake, informed betting practices, and reducing the risks of unwise wagers. Our aim was to become Nigeria’s foremost platform for reliable, verified betting tips and responsible betting.

Project Execution

Research and Ideation: Understanding Nigeria's Betting Landscape

To ground our design in user needs, I began with extensive research into Nigeria's betting culture. Studies showed that over 60 million Nigerians were active in betting, yet a large gap existed in the availability of verified tipping services. My research involved interviews with local bettors and online forums to understand the motivations, frustrations, and needs of the average bettor.

Key Findings:

  • Desire for Credibility: Many bettors were frustrated by fraudulent tipsters and wanted a system that could authenticate tips and their providers.

  • Need for Analytics: Users expressed interest in data-driven insights rather than relying on intuition alone.

  • Community Focus: Nigerian bettors enjoy connecting with others who share their interests. A community leaderboard could add a competitive, engaging element to the platform.

Ideation and Brainstorming: In collaboration with the development and product teams, I explored ways to make data and analytics a central feature. Together, we envisioned a “Global Leaderboard” to gamify the experience and celebrate accurate tipsters, thereby encouraging credibility and competition. We also looked into a P2P subscription model, allowing users to verify tipsters’ credibility before subscribing, creating a self-regulating community of responsible bettors.

Product Thinking and Design Decisions

Moving from ideation to execution, several critical design decisions helped bring Tipstake to life: Armed with insights from our research, we embarked on an ideation phase that encouraged creativity and collaboration. Key design decisions included:

  • User-Centric Interface: We prioritized creating an intuitive interface that made it easy for users to find tips, track performance, and engage with others.

  • Risk Management Tools: We designed tools that allowed users to set betting limits and manage risks. We explored a “Profitability Per Stake” dashboard to show historical performance and break down each tipster's success rate.

  • Global Leaderboard Integration: The leaderboard became a core feature of Tipstake, displaying top-performing tipsters based on their prediction accuracy. This public accountability encouraged responsible tipping while building trust among users.

  • Verified Profiles for Tipsters: To mitigate fraudulent activities, we created verified profiles for registered tipsters, clearly displaying each tipster’s track record and transparency.

  • Community Engagement Tools: Features such as forums and comment sections were integrated to foster discussions around tips and strategies.

Throughout this process, I facilitated brainstorming sessions where team members could share ideas freely. One pivotal moment came when we realized the potential of gamifying the experience by encouraging users not just to bet but also to engage with the community through challenges and rewards.

Design Process: A Journey of Refinement and Breakthroughs

Throughout this process, user feedback played a pivotal role in shaping the product. In initial testing, users found the dashboard data overwhelming, so I refined it by using color-coded visuals to make key insights easy to digest. Similarly, the leaderboard was a hit among test users, who expressed a greater sense of community and motivation through this competitive aspect.

There were also setbacks. For example, we initially launched without a detailed tip-verification process, leading to complaints from users who wanted stronger vetting. Based on this feedback, I worked with the team to build an added layer of verification for tipsters, which vastly improved trust and user satisfaction.

Result Findings and Success Metrics

Collaborations and Stakeholder Engagement

My role involved close collaboration with the development team, product managers, and data analysts. Weekly sprint meetings ensured alignment across teams, and I regularly presented prototypes to stakeholders, who provided valuable feedback on design adjustments. We worked iteratively, with each feedback session leading to insightful tweaks and refinements that better aligned the product with Tipstake’s vision and user needs.

Results and Impact

After launching Tipstake, we closely monitored user engagement metrics:

  • User Adoption: Within three months of launch, we saw an increase in active users compared to initial projections.

  • Retention Rate: Our retention rate stood at 65%, indicating that users found value in our platform.

  • Community Engagement: The introduction of forums and social media activities led to a 60% increase in user interactions within the first month.

  • Building Trust: Verified tipsters and the transparent Global Leaderboard helped foster a trustworthy environment. Users reported feeling more secure and informed about their choices.

  • Enhanced User Engagement: The Global Leaderboard created a sense of friendly competition, leading to a 35% increase in user engagement within the first three months.

  • Increased Subscription Rates: With a reliable tip verification system, we saw a 28% boost in subscriptions to tipsters who demonstrated accurate, responsible betting insights.

These metrics demonstrated that our design choices effectively met user needs while aligning with Tipstake's business goals of promoting responsible betting practices.

Key Learnings and Final Thoughts

Collaboration Fuels Innovation

The diverse perspectives within our team often led us down unexpected yet fruitful paths. Regular brainstorming sessions proved invaluable for creative problem-solving. This project taught me invaluable lessons about designing for social accountability and user trust in an industry where fraud is common. The feedback loop with users and iterative design approach revealed how small changes, like clearer visuals for data interpretation, could drastically improve user comprehension and trust.

Looking back, one improvement would be to implement more sophisticated analytics earlier in the design process to refine the “Profitability Per Stake” feature. Additionally, building out an onboarding process to familiarize new users with data-driven betting could have accelerated user adoption and minimized initial overwhelm.

Exploratory Ideas and Future Visions

Looking ahead, I envision expanding Tipstake's capabilities by incorporating AI-driven analytics that provide personalized betting insights based on user behavior. This could further enhance user engagement and trust in the platform.

Conclusion

Tipstake allowed me to apply my skills as a Product Designer in a space where responsible design can have a profound impact. By creating a product that promotes accountability, community, and transparency, I was able to deliver an experience that not only resonated with users but also aligned with the broader mission of responsible betting. This journey with Tipstake has reinforced my commitment to designing with empathy and integrity and demonstrated how thoughtful design can make a difference in even the most unexpected places.
