"When I received an email from Figma, my heart raced with excitement. They were building a new Slides tool and wanted to collaborate"
This case study recounts the process of collaborating with Figma to create a tool designed to empower both designers and non-designers in building impactful presentations. It details the experience of creating a Figma Slide template from initial outreach to the final launch, offering insights into how community-driven design meets professional innovation.
We would explore the journey, challenges, and outcomes of working alongside Figma's talented team to develop a template for the new presentation tool, Figma Slides, showcased at Config 2024.
The Challenge
The core challenge was to create a template that could serve a diverse audience, from seasoned designers to beginners with no design experience. This required balancing complexity with user-friendliness and simplicity while ensuring flexibility; ensuring that the tool had enough functionality to meet professional standards while remaining approachable for casual users. We also had to anticipate the varied use cases, from business presentations to classroom slides, and ensure the template would adapt seamlessly across them.
The Goal
Figma needed templates that were not only visually compelling but also accessible and intuitive. The primary goal was clear: create a resource that would make presentation-building accessible to everyone; from seasoned designers to novice marketers and educators. Key requirements included: • Adaptable color and text styles • Consistent grid structures • Basically simplicity, flexibility, and user-friendliness.

Research and Ideation
Designing with inclusivity in mind required research into user needs. Drawing on user feedback from my previous templates, I explored what users found challenging and what features they wanted. Figma’s internal insights provided a broader perspective on the types of users who would benefit from the Slides tool, including educators, marketers, and non-designers.
To address these varied needs, I focused on:
User personas: Created profiles based on feedback from designers and non-designers alike, highlighting their pain points and preferences.
Competitive analysis: Examined existing presentation tools and templates, identifying opportunities to streamline workflows and improve usability in Figma Slides.
Ideation sessions: Brainstormed ideas on how to best utilize Figma’s unique features, like auto-layouts and frames, to keep the template adaptive and user-friendly.
The ideation process was about finding a balance between what users needed and how Figma’s unique design tools could meet those needs seamlessly.
Product Thinking and Design Decisions
At the heart of the design was the “Figma touch”.
Incorporating Figma’s signature tools to deliver both simplicity and sophistication. Here are some of the pivotal design choices that shaped the template:
I utilized auto layouts, frames, and other features creatively to make the templates intuitive and visually appealing. The iterative feedback loop with Figma’s team was invaluable; each weekly review brought fresh insights that refined our designs.
The feedback loop with Figma’s team kept the design on course. For example, in one review session, we discussed ways to increase visual engagement on team slides. Incorporating subtle layout shifts and placeholder images created a more dynamic, inviting presentation flow without sacrificing simplicity. These subtle yet impactful changes ensured our template was not only visually compelling but also functional. Hearing positive feedback from the team about how well we captured their vision was incredibly rewarding.
Testing and Fine-Tuning
Once the core design was in place, we shifted into a rigorous testing phase. This stage was critical in identifying minor issues that could affect the user experience. I reviewed the template on different devices, verified that auto layouts functioned smoothly, and made final adjustments based on feedback. Figma’s internal team tested the template as well, which helped pinpoint areas for improvement that I might have overlooked, such as increasing contrast on certain text elements for enhanced readability. By the end of this phase, I felt confident that the template met Figma’s standards for simplicity and flexibility.

Result Findings and Success Metrics
The Impactful Launch at Config
The true payoff arrived at Config, Figma’s annual event, where the tool was launched and our template made its official debut. Watching it go live to an audience of enthusiastic users was both exhilarating and validating. Within days, the community’s positive response reinforced the value of our efforts.
Impact, Metrics, and Reflections
The template’s success was evident in both community engagement and measurable impact. Here are some of the highlights:
Rapid Adoption: Within the first week, the template had thousands of downloads, demonstrating its appeal across diverse user groups.
Community Feedback: Users expressed appreciation for the simplicity and accessibility, noting the easy-to-use layouts and customization options as standout features.
In-Product Visibility: Figma’s decision to feature the template within the product modal enhanced its visibility and increased user engagement.
Current Numbers: The template now ranks as the best performing template by an individual contributor and among the top 4 most used presentation templates on Figma with over 120K usages.
This experience underscored the power of accessible design. Seeing the tool in action, along with the template’s rapid community adoption, highlighted the importance of creating designs that support accessibility and bridge the gap between professional-grade design and everyday usability.
Key Learnings and Final Thoughts
Growing as a Designer and Community Member
Working alongside Figma on this project was a transformative journey, one that strengthened my understanding of user-centered design and deepened my commitment to accessibility. Here are some key lessons I’ll carry forward:
Collaboration Is Key: The iterative feedback loop with Figma’s team was invaluable in refining the design and pushing it to new levels of usability and appeal.
Empathy-Driven Design: Creating a tool that serves a wide audience reminded me of the importance of empathy in design. Each design choice was an opportunity to make the template more intuitive and enjoyable for everyone.
Community Impact: Seeing the template adopted by thousands of users reinforced the value of high-quality design tools, and the impact accessible design can have.
Reflecting on this project, I see it as a reminder of why I love designing: for the opportunity to create tools that empower and elevate users of all backgrounds. This collaboration has inspired me to keep building, iterating, and sharing design resources that make a difference. Looking ahead, I’m excited to explore new opportunities to shape the future of digital design.
Conclusion
This project with Figma was more than a design collaboration; it was a learning experience that deepened my understanding of user-centered design. Creating something accessible to everyone, regardless of design experience, was both challenging and rewarding. I’m grateful to Figma for the opportunity and look forward to more collaborations that bridge design innovation with community impact.
