Fuel Link is a pioneering platform aimed at revolutionizing fuel station management. Designed for station owners, attendants, and customers, the MVP focused on three core components: the Fuel Station Dashboard, Attendant App, and User App. I was responsible for leading the end-to-end design process for Fuel Link’s Minimum Viable Product (MVP). This included user research, ideation, wireframing, prototyping, and delivering high-fidelity designs for all platform components

The Challenge

Fuel station operations are often disjointed, relying on outdated systems that lack integration. Many stations struggle with real-time sales and performance visibility. The management of attendants and scheduling is typically inefficient. Customer engagement remains limited due to a lack of digital features.

The Goal

Our goal was to equip station owners with actionable insights and tools to manage operations effectively. We aimed to enable attendants to handle transactions seamlessly and log duty hours. Finally, we wanted to empower customers with a simple app for finding stations, paying digitally, and enjoying added services.

Project Execution

Research and Ideation

I began with user interviews and surveys involving 5 station managers, 12 attendants, and several regular customers to identify pain points. Through our research, we discovered several key insights.

Managers expressed a strong need for a centralized view of sales and employee performance. Attendants indicated they wanted a simple system for clocking in and processing payments. Customers shared their desire for a reliable app for locating stations, checking fuel prices, and earning rewards.

From these insights, I facilitated ideation sessions with stakeholders and sketched out initial concepts for each platform component.

Product Thinking and Design Decisions

1. Fuel Station Dashboard

Key Features: Sales overview, attendant management, station setup, and pricing setup.

We prioritized accessibility by implementing high-contrast designs and screen reader compatibility. While designing an intuitive layout for diverse users presented a challenge, we solved this by dividing the dashboard into clear, labeled sections with interactive elements to streamline navigation.

2. Attendant App

Key Features: Barcode scanning, payment handling, and shift management.

We focused on ease of use with a minimalistic interface for attendants handling multiple tasks. A significant breakthrough came when we integrated a clock-in/clock-out feature based on user feedback, which reduced manual tracking errors.

3. User App

Key Features: Station locator, wallet integration, and loyalty features.

We included a fuel station locator with filters for pricing, ratings, and services. Looking ahead, we planned potential features like car maintenance scheduling and towing services to keep users engaged.

Walkthrough of the Design Process

Phase 1: Wireframes and Prototyping

I created low-fidelity wireframes to visualize the structure and flow of each platform component. Feedback from stakeholders guided iterative improvements.

Phase 2: High-Fidelity Design

For the Fuel Station Dashboard, I designed a Sales Overview page featuring interactive graphs and data tables, and a Pricing Setup module with dropdown menus for strategy adjustments. For the User App, I crafted onboarding screens, authentication flows, and a payment wallet, ensuring seamless navigation.

Phase 3: Testing and Refinement

I conducted usability tests with 10 participants. The results led to simplified navigation in the dashboard, improved layout for the attendant app's clock-in feature, and enhanced search filters in the user app.

Result Findings and Success Metrics

Meeting User Needs

Managers benefited from streamlined operations and improved decision-making with real-time insights. Attendants experienced reduced transaction errors and simplified shift logging. Users enjoyed enhanced convenience with digital payments and station discovery tools.

Aligning with Business Goals:

We boosted operational efficiency by integrating analytics and performance metrics, and strengthened customer retention with loyalty and subscription features.

Success Metrics:

We achieved a 20% reduction in attendant logging errors during testing, 15% faster transaction times for attendants, and received positive feedback from 90% of test participants.

Key Learnings and Final Thoughts

Challenges:

We faced the challenge of balancing scope with feasibility for the MVP and designing for accessibility without compromising aesthetics.

Breakthroughs:

We successfully introduced a modular approach to expand future features like fuel delivery and fleet management, and gained stakeholder alignment through interactive prototypes and clear communication.

Key Learnings and Final Thoughts

Lessons Learned

We found that early user involvement accelerates problem-solving and ensures design relevance. Additionally, flexibility in scope proved crucial for adapting to evolving project needs.

Fuel Link's MVP demonstrated my ability to tackle complex design challenges, collaborate effectively, and deliver impactful solutions. This project affirmed my commitment to creating user-centered designs that align with business goals, leaving me eager to build even more transformative products.
