Imagine being a small business owner, rushing to secure a reliable truck for your next shipment. Long waits, unpredictable costs, and a lack of transparency can be frustrating. This is the challenge SAFER set out to solve. The mission? To create a seamless, user-friendly truck hailing platform that bridges the gap between truck owners and users while addressing pain points like insurance validation, real-time tracking, and secure payments.
As the Lead Product Designer on this ambitious project, I guided the team through a journey of design innovation, collaboration, and problem-solving to bring SAFER to life.
The Challenge
The truck logistics industry is riddled with inefficiencies; manual booking processes, lack of insurance oversight, and limited digital solutions.
The Goal
To deliver a mobile and web application that enhances the user experience, meets business objectives, and addresses the unique challenges of truck logistics.

Project Execution
Turning Ideas into Reality: Understanding User Needs
We started by conducting user interviews and industry research, speaking with truck owners, logistics managers, and potential users.
Key findings included:
Users wanted reliability: Real-time tracking was a must-have to instill confidence.
Truck owners needed flexibility: An easy way to manage bookings and validate their trucks.
Insurance validation was critical: Only insured trucks could be trusted for safe transit.
Key Insight: Trust was the cornerstone for all stakeholders. The system had to validate truck status, integrate with insurance databases, and offer a secure experience for payments and bookings.
Crafting the Vision: Exploratory Ideas
I facilitated design workshops with stakeholders to brainstorm features. We explored:
Integrating a QR code system to identify and verify truck status.
A matching algorithm to pair users with the closest available trucks.
Gamified elements for truck owners, like badges for on-time deliveries, to promote reliability.
These ideas became the foundation for our feature set, ensuring both practicality and innovation.
Design Decisions and Execution
User Management:
We designed a seamless onboarding flow, reducing sign-up friction through social media logins and intuitive forms. Role-based dashboards tailored the experience for users, truck owners, and admins.
Truck Registration & Validation:
A detailed registration form allowed truck owners to input their vehicle details. API integration with insurance providers and the National Police Force database ensured real-time insurance validation.
Real-Time Tracking:
Using GPS and a map interface, users could track trucks during transit. This feature was informed by user feedback emphasizing transparency.
Booking & Payments:
We streamlined the booking process with a multi-step wizard for fare calculation, truck selection, and payment. The integration of multiple payment gateways ensured convenience and security.
Admin Dashboard:
Admins could monitor platform activity through analytics dashboards, manage users and trucks, and validate bookings.
Prototyping and Testing: From Ideas to Reality
I created high-fidelity prototypes for both web and mobile interfaces using Figma. These were tested with 15 users, leading to several key refinements:
Simplifying the booking process by merging steps.
Enhancing visibility of the real-time tracking map on mobile screens.
Adding visual cues to the admin dashboard for quick status checks.
Testing feedback guided iterative improvements, ensuring a user-centered design approach.

Result Findings and Success Metrics
Meeting User Needs
User Retention: Alpha tests shows 80% of selected users completed bookings without drop-off. A testament to the streamlined booking process.
Trust Built: Insurance validation and GPS tracking led to increase in user trust ratings during feedback sessions.
Aligning with Business Goals
Revenue Growth: With seamless payments, the platform is projected to process about $20,000 in transactions in the first month.
Efficiency Gains: Admin users reported a 40% reduction in time spent validating trucks and managing bookings.
Key Learnings and Final Thoughts
Breakthroughs and Challenges
One pivotal moment was integrating insurance validation via external APIs. Early testing revealed inconsistencies with API responses, but through close collaboration with the developers and the third-party providers, we resolved these issues.
Lessons Learned:
Importance of User Feedback: Iterative testing highlighted pain points we hadn’t initially considered.
Collaboration Matters: Engaging stakeholders early ensured alignment and clarity.
Future Visions:
Implementing AI-driven analytics for predictive truck maintenance.
Introducing dynamic pricing models based on demand.
Expanding to B2B partnerships with logistics companies for bulk bookings.
Final Thoughts: Designing for Impact
SAFER wasn’t just about building an app; it was about solving real problems for real people. This project strengthened my ability to balance user needs with business objectives, foster cross-functional collaboration, and design for trust and scalability.
I’m proud of the platform we created, and I look forward to applying these learnings to future challenges in product design.
