Cointra sought to offer an intuitive interface for crypto users to trade, exchange, and manage their portfolios. With an aim to make real-time data and advanced tools accessible on a mobile device, this app would empower users to make more informed decisions and seize market opportunities.
The Challenge
New users often struggle with cryptocurrency trading, and many abandon it within months, frustrated by complex interfaces and overwhelming data. They’d experimented with other platforms, but none met their expectations in terms of usability and feature accessibility. Cointra is a solution that aims to retain these users by creating an engaging experience that prioritized simplicity without sacrificing powerful features.
The Goal
The goal was to design a mobile app that allows users to easily trade cryptocurrencies, view real-time market data, and utilize a range of trading tools. The app needed to strike a balance between sophistication and user-friendliness to boost transactions and retain newcomers in the volatile world of crypto.
Project Execution
Research and Ideation
The project began with a review of user needs and competitor analysis. Through user surveys and research, I identified common pain points:
Accessibility of Information: Many users found real-time data overwhelming and difficult to interpret.
Trust and Security Concerns: The crypto space is notorious for scams; users sought reassurance through transparency and security.
Tool Complexity: While advanced users appreciated complex trading tools, beginners often felt alienated.
These insights led me to focus on creating a platform that emphasized ease of use, trustworthiness, and flexibility to cater to both beginner and advanced traders.
Key Research Approaches
User Surveys: To understand firsthand what users wanted and disliked in existing trading platforms.
Competitor Benchmarking: I analyzed other apps for usability, feature range, and design principles, noting gaps we could fill.
Stakeholder Interviews: Collaborated with Cointra’s management to align on business objectives, including user retention and transaction volume targets.
Product Thinking and Design Decisions
The design approach revolved around a few guiding principles:
Simplicity in Complexity: Make advanced features feel intuitive and non-intimidating, creating a flow that feels natural to users of all experience levels.
Transparency and Control: Equip users with real-time data displayed in a digestible format, enhancing their confidence and control over trading decisions.
User Education: Introduce subtle cues and tooltips to guide new users and reduce their learning curve without overwhelming them.
Story of the Design Process
This was a personal project and at the start, I brainstormed ways to make the app flow feel intuitive and engaging. A pivotal moment came when user feedback indicated that the layout of trading tools directly affected their decision-making. This insight led me to implement a modular layout, allowing users to customize their dashboard and arrange the tools they used most frequently.
Another major breakthrough came during prototype testing. I observed that users, especially beginners, appreciated simplified data visuals, like color-coded market indicators and interactive charts. Based on this, I reworked the design to replace dense data tables with visuals that conveyed trends at a glance. This design decision not only increased user engagement but also boosted confidence among new users, who felt empowered to make informed decisions.
Collaboration and Iteration
Regular testing and reviews with potential users allowed me to keep refining my approach based on their insights into user behavior and business objectives. Through these iterative testing and user feedback sessions, I designed the user interface to be both intuitive and powerful.
Result Findings and Success Metrics

The project achieved its primary objectives by striking a balance between sophistication and user-friendliness to boost transactions and retain new users to crypto currencies. The focus on user experience and data transparency aligned perfectly with Cointra’s goal of making crypto trading more accessible, establishing the potential of the app being a trustworthy and valuable tool for all levels of traders.
Key Learnings and Final Thoughts
Reflecting on the Cointra project, several key learnings stood out:
Prioritize the User's Perspective: Simplifying complex features was essential to user adoption. Iterative testing and direct user feedback proved invaluable.
Collaboration is Crucial: Regular touchpoints with users allowed me to design features that were both desirable to users and technically feasible.
Focus on Transparency: Clear, real-time data visualization can empower users, building trust in both the app and the brand.
If I could revisit any part of this project, I would invest even more time in onboarding tutorials. While users appreciated the tooltips and guidance, an interactive onboarding experience could further streamline the learning process, especially for first-time traders.
Future Vision
Looking ahead, I envision several potential improvements for the Cointra platform:
Enhanced AI-Driven Insights: Integrating AI to provide users with predictive insights based on market trends.
Expanded Education Hub: Adding a resource center with tutorials and articles could deepen user engagement, particularly for beginners looking to build their knowledge.
Social Trading Features: Enabling users to follow top traders and view their strategies could foster community and inspire new traders.
The Cointra project was a rewarding journey that reinforced the impact of user-centered design and strategic thinking. I’m proud of the outcome and excited to carry forward the insights gained from this experience into future projects.
